Yurts

NEW eco-retreats may have yurts for year-round accommodations in Colorado.

Yurts are circular domed tents of felt, skins or waterproof fabrics stretched over a collapsible lattice framework, originally used for dwellings by pastoral nomadic groups in the steppes and mountains of Inner Asia, including Mongolia, Siberia, and Turkey.

The many interconnected points in the circular structures of yurts provide a high level of stability and flexibility. They are designed to withstand the harsh weather conditions of the Mongolian steppe, including strong winds and freezing temperatures. The way the wind flows around round homes can help withstand a wide array of natural disasters including earthquakes, hurricanes and gale-force winds.

While most traditional homes today have sharp corners and angular walls, living in round spaces instead offers unique benefits. On average, round buildings use 15 percent to 20 percent less materials per square foot compared to rectangular designs. Windows and door placement can maximize solar heat and light. Insulation liners can keep yurts warm in the winter and cool in the summer by reflecting up to 97 percent of radiant heat.

Today there are many companies selling yurt kits with various styles. The feature photo above is from Colorado Yurts that offers customized kits and a selection of fabric colors, like redstone, adobe and sage that are designed to complement the beauty and colors of nature.
